22nd September 2024

WELCOME TO
SQUEAKY BONE

This running relay race is open to all ability levels, you just need to have 4 willing team members. There are two distances to choose from, 3.5 miles and 2.3 miles (the whole team must run the same route) with each member running the entire cross-country loop. They then hand their Squeaky Bone baton to the next team member...

The 2023 race attracted so many teams and we were blessed with truly glorious weather, great home-made cakes, a whole lot of squeaking and general frivolity!

We look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible and to hearing those bones squeak!

The 2024 Squeaky Bone race will take place on Sunday 22nd September 2024 at 10am (registration at 9am)

Turvey House

WHY IS IT CALLED SQUEAKY BONE?

Olney is renowned for its lace making history where bone bobbins were used by the poor women and children to keep them from the workhouse. In 1880, William Cowper wrote 'I am an eye witness to their poverty.'

With raw materials scarce and costly, bone bobbins were procured from all sources (it is suggested that this is why there is a lack of graveyards in Olney!)

In recognition of the town's history, whenever Olney Runners run a relay race we enact the supply of bone bobbins to the lace makers who would 'squeak by' on a limited income!

Entry Opens Soon

This cross-country relay race is open to all ability levels and is run on private estate in Bedfordshire.

There are two distances to choose from, 3.5 mile (min aged 14) and 2.3 mile (min age 10) The whole team must run the same route with each member running the entire loop before handing their Squeaky Bone baton to the next team member.

Each team needs four team members, if you don't know who the four people are when you do your entry you can still create a team with 'dummy' members and update their details later. We advise teams with an average 5k time of 35 min + to run the short route
